Hello!
A little about ourselves
This workshop has a purpose of giving children who do not have the opportunity to be themselves in a classroom setting the chance to be just that: THEMSELVES.
Once a week, each week, we will hold a workshop day at Kingsford High School in the art room. There will be easy, comprehensible projects that varies every other week. Each project will have at least two sessions to be worked on, depending on time and those finished. Children enrolled will be able to work on their own pace and each student will be encouraged to do their best and use the time allotted to relax and enjoy each other's company.

Genius Hour Reflection Activity Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters. The purpose of my Genius Hour Project has been to create an environment for special needs children to be able to see the world the way they want to. I created an art class to help children with specific needs so they can establish a comfortable space to be themselves and express their feelings in ways that they cannot during their ordinary day. Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.) At the beginning of the year, I decided to share my knowledge of art in a way to help younger students and children with special needs so that they may have an outlet as to express themselves without feeling as though they are not allowed to. In this environment, I decided to use art as a main subject to help teach them patience, skills, and even teamwork. I was able to see each and every one of their progress as they all went through the art work. Each child was given the opportunity to show their emotions in ways that they did not have to feel uncomfortable about saying something they could possibly be embarrassed about. The kids that went to my class were very tentative and they surprised me even. They grew on me and gave me a sense of being that I had not had before. Working with special needs kids made me see the world differently. It made me see the way they see the world. Each child was different in what ways they needed to be spoken to and how to show them something. They each understood things differently than the other it reminded me of some sort of diversity that I miss from home. But every single one of them gave their one hundred percent in all of their art projects. I saw so much talent in what they gave me. While working with the children, I was able to see the stress and anxiety about school or even family issues roll off of them when they started painting or sketching. That was the main goal for this project. It was an outlet for special needs kids to have at their fingertips so they would not have to be worried about being ridiculed by anyone and just be themselves. The group of kids that I worked with were amazing and I feel like they taught me more about them than I taught them about art. The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.) By showing off the talents of each and every individual who participated in the art classes and learning techniques I provided to enhance their artistic abilities, I managed to share these children's talents with their community, their parents and family. While teaching these children, I have come to learn a much greater understanding of what it means to be patient and to be sensible. I hope that the children who came to learn in the ways of art will take with them the same passion they showed me and the enthusiasm that got them this far. I hope that by the parents seeing how wonderful they worked individually and in groups with their peers, they will be able to better comprehend just what their child is capable of. Art is not just picking up a pencil and doodling. To be able to put to life what you imagine in your head is something quite remarkable. I had the enormous opportunity to help children better distinguish and hone in on their own abilities to be able to do this. It taught them a certain type of discipline to be patient and to see the world as their own. I hope that they can put what they learned in the classroom in their real life situations and be okay in the long run. If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.) If I could do anything different with my Genius Hour project it would be the size of the class. I loved working with the children in the group that I had but I did not have as many children as I thought I would. If I could change that, I would. There would be more kids in each class and I would have multiple classes. There would also be separations of each age group so that the flow of learning can go based on how fast each group learns. It would match up with every child without hindering one or speeding up another before they are ready. I would also change the way I went about teaching the class. I feel like at some point I was overwhelmed in the class and I needed a little help attending to each child's needs. So if I decided to do this again, I would want to have a partner to help me arrange everything needed for each class. They would help me with the art supplies and managing to every kid. I would also incorporate a type of fundraiser to start earning money for the classes. This may even help out with a bigger facility if I manage to get a bigger class. Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.) I feel like I was capable of keeping up to my schedule with the class and our week to week activities. I was able to help the children that needed help on their projects and they would seem pretty satisfied with the work they ended up with. When a child needed someone to listen to them talk about their day, I was able to help them get to a better mood and acknowledge that they needed me. There were times that I needed to be accountable for these children and I was capable of doing that. I feel like my biggest accomplishment during the course of my project was that I was able to set up an environment where kids were able to come comfortably and be themselves without the worrisome of being bullied or ridiculed. I gave them a way to put themselves out there with the one hundred percent guarantee no one would laugh at them for what they say or draw. I feel accomplished with this project and I am proud of the kids that I worked with for being both patient with me as I learned how to teach them myself and being so uniquely wonderful. I really hope the world can one day see them as I do. Include any videos, pictures, presentations, or artifacts that will document your journey. |
